To help airports design energy-efficient baggage handling and sorting systems, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS offers the NORD ECO service. In this way, the northern German company is making an important contribution to achieving the climate goals in this sector.

NORD is a provider of innovative drive solutions for more than 100 industries. With the NORD ECO service, the drive specialist has already enabled many companies to improve the performance and energy efficiency of their systems by modernising and reducing the number of variants of the components used.
Energy-efficient systems for airports

"Baggage handling systems often offer savings potential, especially when it comes to the drive system," explains Jörg Niermann, Marketing Manager at NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. "We offer our NORD ECO service to optimise existing systems and find the best possible drive solution." The NORD ECO box performs comprehensive measurements over a period of at least two weeks. Depending on dead loads, load peaks or irregular conditions, it becomes clear that the dimensions of a system match the requirements of the respective application. "We often come across drive systems that are clearly oversized for the application and then develop a new solution," adds Jörg Niermann. The installation of a replacement system is followed by a comparative measurement and a final analysis. "In conclusion, the NORD ECO process reduces energy consumption and costs, as well as CO2 emissions." As a result, NORD was able to identify significant potential savings for the drive systems of baggage handling and sorting systems at various airports and implement alternative solutions.

Potential savings in figures
At an airport that was already using energy-efficient drive systems with an IE3 motor, measurements with the NORD ECO service concluded that an energy saving of around 20% could be achieved with a DuoDrive solution with an IE5+ motor and a decentralised NORDAC LINK frequency inverter. After comparing the two systems over a period of just over a year, potential savings of 590 kWh and 396 kg of CO2 could finally be calculated.

Airports that used a DuoDrive solution with a NORD IE5+ motor in their baggage handling systems instead of drive systems with an IE1 motor were able to achieve potential savings of up to 48%. thus reducing the annual CO2 emissions of the application by 144 kg per drive system according to calculations. The low operating temperatures of the DuoDrive and the choice to reduce the number of variants also proved beneficial. The additional costs associated with more efficient drive systems are also quickly amortised through public subsidies.
